Given the rapid growth of the Web and online technology, many academic
institutions today require a learning platform. Ease-of-adoption
hosted platform. Our learning platform is hosted, which means
your organisation can get online within a few days. Shelve the need
to buy IT hardware or hire extra IT staff to manage the learning platform.
Furthermore, our platform is secure, which means all your learning
activities are private to your institution. Learning
tools. Our learning platform supports a learner-centric approach
and provides a range of learning tools including content sharing,
announcements, discussion boards, messaging, assignment management
and grade-books. The platform can be used to deliver fully-online
programmes or as a device to support face-to-face teaching.
Reliability and scalability. We provide a robust, reliable
learning platform. Our platform is highly scalable and can support
your institution’s needs, whether it is for a few hundred students
in your school or many thousands university-wide. Ease-of-use.
Our learning platform is designed for ease of use so that even educators
with little experience with online learning platforms should be able
to navigate and use it as part of their teaching. We also include
an online orientation programme and a range of tutorials as part of
our platform to smoothen the learning curve. Look
and feel. We customise the look and feel of the platform
to meet the branding requirements of your own institution, such that
our involvement is transparent to your users. Students and faculty
will think that the learning platform is developed by the institution
itself. E-library. We can help you set
up your own online library for seamless access to your library resources.
We also equip your users with the necessary skills to become proficient
users of online information resources. We assist in identifying appropriate
publishers and aggregators based on your library resource needs, to
create an online library that is integrated with the learning platform.
We can also setup subject-specific libraries and identify e-books,
journals and other e-resources that are relevant to a particular subject.
Managed services. Our learning platform
is designed to be self-managed by administrators at your institution.
Alternatively, we have a dedicated team of service specialists who
are able to do this on your institution's behalf through our managed
services.

In today’s scenario, quality services and support are critical
to meet day-to-day operational needs. Most academic institutions
employ teams of support staff to assist in the operational running
of programmes. The same type of services are required when institutions
adopt an online learning platform, and a support team would normally
be employed to manage it. This, however, may not be the best option
for all institutions.
GLS provides not only cognitive support through our professors,
learning resources and performance support systems, but also emotive
and technical support. The breadth of our support services goes
beyond the usual provision in traditional educational institutions.
Comprising Facilitator Support, Student Care Services and Technical
Support, our teams work closely together to present a holistic system
supporting our global community of learners and facilitators.
Clients are offered services from any one component, or a combination
of any of the above-mentioned components. In short, our managed
services take the burden of administration and support off the institution.
In all cases, specific service level agreements can be crafted to
meet your institutional requirements.
Programme admissions. We offer support in the processing
of admissions. Our team can establish an online admissions system
to structure and streamline the admissions process. We can check
the completeness of applications, and support the production of
admission letters and student contracts.
Programme administration. A programme administration
team will handle the scheduling of classes in the online learning
platform, any set-up associated with each class, plus the enrolment
of students and assignment of faculty members to those classes.
Student services. A student services team supports
the learning needs of students by handling specific student requests
and ensuring that their online learning experience is a smooth one.
A student services team also enables faculty to focus on teaching
and learning by undertaking learning platform related issues and
administrative tasks on behalf of the faculty member.
Student records. We can capture and store student
records electronically. Student records are kept securely and backed-up
on a regular basis. We provide a web-based interface for staff at
your institution so that they have access to those records anytime,
anywhere.
Dedicated IT help-desk. We can provide a dedicated
IT help-desk to facilitate the day-to-day technical support needs
of your organisation. There is no need to employ your own staff.
If necessary, we can provide 24-hour support via email and telephone.
E-library support. We can advise institutions on
how to set up an online library within the learning platform. If
required, we also provide continued assistance to students and faculty
on the use of the e-library through our dedicated team of library
experts. We can also assist in identifying cases and resources that
might be suitable for specific subjects and support you in collating
reports to monitor library usage.
Participant Orientation Programme (POP). Our platform
is easy to use, but there may be instances where you feel it is
necessary to run a formal orientation programme. Our POP is designed
to familiarise participants with the online learning environment
before commencing with actual learning, thus ensuring that learning
time is not eaten into while participants struggle with the new
interface, tools and techniques of an unfamiliar learning environment.
The POP is facilitated by an experienced platform specialist.
Programme evaluation. The success of a programme
is judged on more than just its development and delivery; more often
than not some form of evaluation is required.
We provide a range of tools for programme
evaluation, including customised surveys and questionnaires, as
well as detailed participation reports.

Focus on your core education goals while depending
on us to manage and support your online learning programmes. |
| 2. |
|
Address your specific institutional support
needs without having to hire your own support team. |
| 3. |
|
Offer your students and faculty a user-friendly
environment that makes learning an enjoyable experience. |

Content comes in a range of different forms, from electronic documents
such as PowerPoint slides to instructionally-designed courseware.
We provide an array of services to support the content requirements
of your programmes and to match your desired level of sophistication.
Content digitisation. Content digitisation refers
to the creation of simple digital content. Examples include
the recording of physical lectures to create online video-lectures,
or the addition of audio recordings to PowerPoint to create online
streaming presentations.
Instructional design. Our instructional design team will
work with faculty and subject matter experts to transform raw content
into online courseware designed around structured learning outcomes
and the required level of interactivity.
Rights management. We have the capability to search
out third-party content contained in your programmes and to establish
the content ownership. We subsequently obtain permission on your behalf
to use this content and monitor the licensing contracts for you. At
the same time, we can advise you on how to safeguard your own content
from unauthorised usage.
Existing subject content library. We have an existing
library of online subjects suitable for business management and IT
management programmes. The subjects were authored by experts and developed
to a high instructional design standard. Individual subjects can be
incorporated into your own programmes, saving you the effort required
to develop new content and so enabling you to launch your programmes
quickly.
Content customisation. We can further customise the
content that you use from our library of existing content. For example,
your faculty may want to use specific cases or articles in a particular
subject, or want to add additional topics. Essentially, you get a
tailored version of our content for specific use in your institution.
Content writing. Where we have the relevant expertise,
our global faculty and learning design team can assist in writing
content for specific courses for which your institution may not have
the capacity or capability.
Case development. Rather than re-use existing off-the-shelf
cases, we can also assist in developing new cases, whether for academic
use or executive education purposes. Our faculty have experience in
writing short mini-cases for discussion or authentic assessment cases.
Cases are written in a way that requires students to apply theory
to practical situations that are often unstructured and multi-dimensional.
1.
|
 |
Quickly acquire the relevant content required to launch online programmes or subjects. |
| 2. |
|
Make use of multiple options content digitisation,
instructional design, licensing or content-writing to acquire
online content. |
| 3. |
|
Create online content that matches your level
of online education advancement, from beginners to advanced
online educators. |
| 4. |
|
Be sure that your content does not impinge
on existing intellectual property rights. |
| 5. |
|
Acquire and own the intellectual property
rights to an unique learning resource that is specifically tailored
to your organisation, rather than an ‘off-the-shelf’
resource. |

Central to the success of any programme, online or face-to-face,
is its faculty. In an online learning environment, it is especially
important to have faculty members who are comfortable with online
education. GLS provides a number of faculty and competency development
services designed to build and enhance your capability in online
programmes:
Programme design. Our learning design specialists
and faculty can help you with the design of online programmes to
meet academic needs or the needs of executive education. We can
also assist with the design of online assessments. This includes
the creation of authentic assessments, the assessment of online
discussions and the development of online examinations.
Online adjunct faculty. We have a global team of
PhD-qualified, research-orientated faculty who are experienced online
educators. Such faculty members can serve as online adjunct faculty
for your own programmes where you may lack the appropriate faculty
resources.
Faculty development programme (FDP). We have a
3-week online FDP that can be used to raise the level of online
learning competency within your own faculty. The programme is designed
for those with little prior experience of online education and provides
participants opportunities to learn from our facilitators and each
other. It also includes practical exercises which clarify participant
engagement expectations, as well as provide the basis for problem-based
learning techniques. Pick up the nuances and complexities of online
teaching and learning, plus tips on communication, material development,
and mentoring methods.
Learning Design. Our Learning Design programme
provides both individual and collaborative learning opportunities,
with synchronous and asynchronous activities as part of the course.
Personal reflection, group discussions, collaborative projects and
presentations contribute to an engaging experience. Participants
will also get first-hand practice using the learning tools in an
online environment. They will leave with a good understanding and
better appreciation of learning design. Learning specialists who
want to design and deliver effective online programmes for adults
will find this course a particularly valuable jumpstart.
Learning Tools. Many online tools are being developed
around the world today. Which tools are good for learning, and which
learning activities are they best suited to? Are you able to maximise
their effectiveness? Identifying the best online tools which are
current, relevant and useful requires a familiarity which GLS possesses.
Our substantial experience in providing online learning is encapsulated
in this unique programme on the use of learning tools. We specifically
focus on tools which support knowledge creation through reflection,
collaboration, application and presentation in an online learning
environment.
Competency development workshops. We can develop
and run custom workshops, either in face-to-face mode or via webinars,
to address specific challenges you may have in online education.
| 1. |
 |
Overcome the challenge of finding appropriately-qualified,
dedicated faculty who are well-versed in online teaching. |
| 2. |

The LH Martin Institute
for Higher Education Leadership and Management (LHMI) was established
with the support of the Commonwealth Government to enhance tertiary
education in Australia and New Zealand. It specialises in postgraduate
award programmes, executive education, research and consultancy.
LHMI’s collaborations include universities and government
education agencies. It also has strong international links. In order
for the institute to effectively reach its intended demographic
across the nation and other parts of the world, it decided to adopt
online learning as a key strategy, starting with its Graduate Certificate
in Quality Assurance.
What: Moving from face-to-face education to online learning
GLS played a consultancy role in LHMI’s preparation of its
content to our ‘3A’ standard. Subsequently, in a quick-to-market
timeframe of less than eight weeks, we re-designed the content with
built-in standards for interoperability and re-usability, and uploaded
it in LHMI’s installed learning management system (LMS).
GLS further provided familiarisation training for facilitators,
which included tips on communication, establishing an online presence,
and the use of online tools, among other areas.
Since its launch, both faculty and students have been extremely
satisfied with the online learning experience. Discussion is under
way for the conversion of content for other programmes also.
“It has been a pleasure working with GLS. They have been very
open and helpful in sharing their experiences with us and have been
extremely flexible in adapting the material to our needs.”
Assoc. Prof. Leo Goedegebuure
Deputy Director, LHMI

The spectre of Sars and H1N1 has awakened the engineering school at
the university to the need for a distance learning platform. At the
same time, the Dean sees this as an online learning opportunity for
her students. The school, has, however, neither experience nor the
right content for an online environment.
What: Holistic implementation of online learning
After an initial workshop to clarify benefits, roles, and responsibilities,
GLS and the engineering school selected a suitable initial subject.
The faculty’s professor worked with GLS’s in-house instructional
design engineers to render the teaching material ready for effective
online learning. This included developing various experiential learning
activities to provide reflection, practice and collaboration opportunities.
GLS helped the school migrate from its existing IT system to U21Global’s
robust platform in order to exploit its Web2.0 interactive capabilities.
School faculty were provided both hard- and soft-skill training for
online learning. Following this, all students attended a mandatory
Student Orientation Programme, supported by the GLS’ Student
Services team.
In the GLS online learning environment, students now discuss and share
their work online. They use online collaborative tools to develop
their project documents in the system, in a near-real world situation.
Projects are presented online, recorded, and submitted as part of
the deliverables in their subjects. |
